How to deindex a page instantly
There are many instances, where a page on your website appears in the search results and you need it deleted immediately. In some cases, it might be due to the page having a trade secret on it, or it might be due to an SEO reason. This blog post will teach you how to remove content from Google’s search results within single digit hours, if not ten’s of minutes.
Reasons why de-indexing might be necessary
You accidentally revealed business secrets: Regardless of what the content is, it poses a risk if a competitor, etc, read it. For example, say your content writer published content which leaves you open to a potential lawsuit, or say you’re a blog owner and one of your writers wrote something libelous, in this situation not only do you want to make sure that you delete the content from your site(or make it inaccessible), but more importantly you want to delete it from Google’s search results so no one can see it period.
You have duplicate content: After the Panda algorithm update was unveiled, numerous websites ended up realizing they had duplicate content which was hurting them. For example, we recently saw an e-commerce retailer who had the same copy of their website on 3 different domains they owned. They thought doing this would increase their chances of getting traffic on all three domain names. Instead, they ended up penalizing all of their websites. We had to de-index the domains, in order to make some quick moves.
SEO issues: It is not uncommon for there to be an SEO reason for landing pages necessitating removal from search results. In one instance, we saw a lawyer-client have 4 landing pages, all competing for the same keyword. Google was royally confused, since it couldn’t tell which page should rank for a certain keyword. In order to move quickly, we consolidated the content from all 4 landing pages into 1 landing page. In order to prevent any duplicate content issues, resulting in a penalty to our new landing page, we used the method below to quickly de-index all of the landing pages.
Here’s what you have to do
This technique leverages Google webmaster tools. Google webmaster tools has an option in it, which allows you to “remove,” a page from Google’s search engine results.
(click to make larger)
First, login to Google webmaster tools. Click on the “Google index” button, which will reveal a drop-down list of options.
Click on Remove URLS, click on Temporarily Hide, and then in the “empty field,” that appears, copy + paste the url of the page.
For example, if the page you want to de-index is: http://www.seo-company.qumana.com/page123
Then you would type in page 123
Cool Things You Can Do
This tool is one of the fastest ways to not only remove PAGES, but in addition you can remove entire directories from your website. For example, say you have a directory like: http://www.google.com/canada/page1 —- if you type in canada, into the field that appears after you click “temporarily hide,” you can essentially de-index the entire folder/category of Canada. This means ALL pages in the category are gone.
